Question

Write K_a expressions for the following acids. a) HC_2H_3O_2 b) HNO_3 c) H_2CO_3 d) H_3PO_4 If Ka for HNO_2, = 4.5 times 10^-4, find the [H^+] a 0.9 M HNO_2 solution. Find the [H^+] of a 0.153 M HOCl solution with a K = 3.2 times 10^-8. Find the value of Ka of an acid if a 2.00 M solution has a hydrogen ion concentration [H^+] of 0.14 M. Nicotinic acid (HC_2H_4NO_2) is a B vitamin. It is also a weak acid with a Ka = 1.4 times 10^-5 What is the [H^+] and pH of a 0.010 M solution? Find the concentration of all species in a 0.10 mol L solution of NaOH. Determine the concentration of all species in a 0.65 mol L solution of a weak base NH_3 if the base dissociation constant is 1.8 times 10^-5.

Explanation / Answer

Given

1) CH3COOH

CH3COOH (aq) + H2O (l) <----> CH3COO- (aq) + H3O+ (aq)

Ka = [CH3COO-] [H3O+] / [CH3COOH]

we need not add H2O as it is in liquid form it will be in excess it will lot greater than other concentration so it can be considered equal to one

2) HNO3

Its a strong acid so it will diasociate completely no Ka

Ka = [H+] [NO3-] / [HNO3]

3) H2CO3

Ka = [H+][HCO3-] / [H2CO3]

d) H3PO4

Ka = [H+][H2PO4-] / [H3PO4]
