Question

True/ false, small explanation if possible please

Hardness is defined by the resistance of the material to indentation. Bcc metals are usually ductile than fcc metals because of more slip systems exist in the former than in the latter. Work hardening is defined by heavy deformation to create high density of dislocations The very useful properties, e.g., strength and toughness, of metallic alloys, such as Fe-C, Al-Cu and Ti-Al systems, are achieved by precipitation of second phases with high elastic moduli. Larger the internal cracks in a material, higher the stress intensity factor, and tougher the material.

Explanation / Answer

Answer-

vi) The given statement is true. The indentation hardness is one of the type of hardness and is measures  the resistance of a sample to material deformation due to a constant compression load from a sharp object.

vii) The BCC metals are usually more ductile than FCC because BCC has more slip system than FCC. The 5 independent slip systems are necessary to make a polycrystalline material ductile. FCC - has 12 slip systems while BCC -has 48 slip systems and expecting better ductile.
