Question

If you can successfully answer the following four problems I will deem that you have successfully mastered General Chemistry. 1) Under conditions of low oxygen concentration yeast can use glucose as both a source of oxygen and energy. This process, called fermentation has the overall effect of converting glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide. A fermenter is charged with 1.0 kg of glucose and 4.0 L of water. Assuming 100% reaction yield, what would the mass% of ethanol be in the resulting solution? 2) In blood plasma, the carbonic acid and hydrogen carbonate ion equilibrium buffers the pH. In this buffer, carbonic acid (H_2 CO) is the hydrogen-ion donor (acid) and hydrogen carbonate ion (HCO^-_3) is the hydrogen-ion acceptor (base). The value of K, for this equilibrium is 7.9 times 10^-7 at body temperature. In blood plasma, the concentration of hydrogen carbonate ion is about twenty times the concentration of carbonic acid. What pH would you expect the plasma to have?

Explanation / Answer

Fermentation reaction can be written as

C6H12O6 => 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2

Meaning we get two molecules of ethanol from one glucose.

We have 1 kg of glucose and 4 L of water.(4000 g of water)

We need to convert glucose to number of moles

Molar mass of glucose is 180.15 g/mol

Moles = grams/ molar mass = 1000 g/180.15 = 5.55 moles.

As per reaction we get double the moles of ethanol .

Moles of ethanol = 5.55*2 = 11.1 moles

Molar mass of ethanol is 46.068 46.07 g/mol

Grams of ethanol = moles of ethanol * molar mass

= 11.1 * 46.07 = 511.36 grams.

Mass % of ethanol = Grams of ethanol/Grams of ethanol+water *100

= 511.36 / (511.36+4000) * 100

= 11.33 %

Mass % of ethanol in resulting solution is 11.33%
