Question

FeBr_2 + 2 KCI rightarrow FeCl_2 + 2 KBr a) What is my theoretical yield of iron (II) chloride if 1 start with 34 grams of iron (W) bromide? b) What is my percent yield of iron (II) chloride if my actual yield is 4.0 grams? TiS + H_2O rightarrow H_2S + TiO What is my percent yield of titanium (II) oxide if I start with 20.0 grams of titanium (II) sulfide and my actual yield of titanium (II) oxide is 22 grams? U + 3 Br_2 rightarrow UBr_6 What is the actual yield of uranium hexabromide if I start with 100.0 grams of uranium and get a percent yield of 83.0%? H_2SO_4 rightarrow H_2O + SO_3 If I start with 89 grams of sulfuric acid and produce 7.1 grams of water, what is my percent yield?

Explanation / Answer

Ans-- 5)

Given reaction is FeBr2 + 2KCl ------> FeCl2 + 2KBr

for calculating theoritical yield , first we have to calculate the moles of limiting reagent using molar mass. in this reaction limiting reagent is FeBr2

moles of FeBr2 = 34 g FeBr2 * 1 mol FeBr2 / 215.65 g FeBr2

=0.158 moles of FeBr2

that means 0.158 moles of FeBr2 required for every mole of Fecl2 .

now, moles of product i,e Fecl2=0.158 moles

a) Theoritical yield : we can convert the moles of FeCl2 to the mass in grams , using molecular weight , which will give us the theoritical yield.

theoritical yield = 0.158 mol of Fecl2 * 126.75 g FeCl2/ 1 mol Fecl2

= 20.02 g Fecl2

b) we can calculate the percent yield using the formula as follows :

percent (%) yield = actual yield / theoritical yield *100%

= 4 / 20.02 * 100%

=19.98%

6) Given reaction is Tis + H2o -----.> H2S + TiO

Moles of limiting reagent i,e Tis is

20 g TiS * 1 mol TiS / 79.93 g TiS

= 0.25 moles of TiS

That means 0.25moles of TiS required for every moles of TiO . Therefore moles of Tio is 0.25( becouse both are 1:1 ratio)

Theoritcal yield = 0.25 mole TiO * 63.86 g TiO/ 1 mole TiO

=15.96 g TiO

percent (%) yield = actual yield / theoritical yield *100%

= 22/15.96 *100%

= 137.84%

percent yield is more than 100%
