Question

ASAP please?

The pH 10 buffer solution was prepared by adding 142 mL of 28% (wt/wt) aqueous NH_3 to 17.5 g of NH_4Cl and diluting to 250 mL with water. What other function does NH_3 perform in the experiment besides buffering? How does NH_3 affect the titration curve of Mg^2+? Does it change the endpoint of the titration (explain why)? It has been similar monodenate ligands. This fact is often referred to as the chelate effect Explain the reason why the chelate effect takes place. You may use any text or resource, as long as you accurately cite the source.

Explanation / Answer

(Mg(H2O))+2 + 4NH3--------- (Mg(NH3)4)+2 + 4H2O Mg+2 prefer NH3 towards H2O as ligands this is partly due to the fact that NH3 provides greater ligand field than H2O chelating agents forms a more stable compound the replacement of monodentated ligands by tri, tetra, penta and hexadentate ligands respectively produce still more entropy changes and accordingly the stability of complexes increases thus there is no change in endpoint of the titration as it is substituted by unidentated ligands.
