Question

30. Check the alternative that is NOT correct: (Justify the correct and wrong answers).

A) The energy required to form an ionic bond is provided, for the most part, by the coulombic attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
B) The energy of the crystalline network of a solid is the difference between the energy of the compacted ions of a solid and the ions very far from a gas, always being positive.

C) The NaCl and KCl ionic solids have the same type of crystalline structure, but the
Coulomb interaction is higher in NaCl because the Na + ion has a lower ionic radius than the K + ion, that is, the NaCl ions are more strongly bound to each other.

D) Non-metallic elements share electrons to form covalent bonds with one another.

E) An atom with high electronegativity has high power to attract electrons. Thus, the most electronegative atom retains the smallest part of electrons of the covalent bond

Explanation / Answer

30. True/fasle statements

A) The energy required to form an ionic bond is provided, for the most part, by the coulombic attraction between the oppositely charged ions : True

The columbic attraction between oppositely charged ions forming an ionic compound decides the formation of ionic bonds. Greater the force of attraction stronger and efficent is the ionci bond formation.

B) The energy of the crystalline network of a solid is the difference between the energy of the compacted ions of a solid and the ions very far from a gas, always being positive : True

This is called lattice energy which is defined by the difference between ions which are far apart from each other to the ones which are present in a compacted crystalline solid.

C) The NaCl and KCl ionic solids have the same type of crystalline structure, but the Coulomb interaction is higher in NaCl because the Na + ion has a lower ionic radius than the K + ion, that is, the NaCl ions are more strongly bound to each other : True

In NaCl, the overall charge to size ratio is much higher than that for KCl, which makes the lattice energy much higher for NaCl than that of KCl. Thus, NaCl with higher melting point is more stringly bound than KCl.

D) Non-metallic elements share electrons to form covalent bonds with one another : True

Non-metalic elements like C forms bonds by sharing or electron as they do not tend to give away electrons completely. Whereas, metals loose electrons or gain electrons like Na to Na+ by loss of electrons to form ionic solids.

E) An atom with high electronegativity has high power to attract electrons. Thus, the most electronegative atom retains the smallest part of electrons of the covalent bond : False.

More electonegative atom pulls more electron density towards itself.
