19. Using the following information to answer the question below. , Calliphora vicina development times at 25 degree C -Egg stage = 12.4 hours -First instar = 10.6 hours -Second instar = 22hours -Third instar = 158.4 hours Threshold temperature is 4 degree C Average temp on September22 was 15 degree C, September21 was 16 degree C, September 20 was 16 degree C, September 19 was 15 degree C, September 18 was 16 degree C, September 17 was 16 degree C A. If the body was discovered at noon on September22 with most mature stage starting to then being 3rd instar, what is the most likely time of death? (4 points) B. If the body was discovered at noon on September 22 with first instar insects, what is the likely range for time of death for this individual?? (4 points)Explanation / Answer
Calliphora vicina goes through five generations namely, egg stage, first instar, second instar, third instar, and pupa stage. The pupa stage last about 11 days. The overall life cycle lasts approximately 18 days.
Given, the threshold temperature is 4oC.
A. The average temperature on 22nd September is 15oC; therefore, at noon the temperature would be bit higher than 15oC, favouring the start of being 3rd instar. Given, the third instar stage last for 158.4 hours at 25oC. Since the temperature on 22nd September is lower than 25oC, the third instar stage would last for more time period about 168 hours. It then changes into adult fly in around 146 hours and reaches the time of death in around 482 hours.
B. Since the body was discovered in first instar stage, the time to reach death would be around 522 hours, as first instar stage would last for around 15 hours at 15oC and second instar would last for about 26 hours.
