Question
Write the two acid-base neutralization reactions and reaction 1. (two neutralization reactions: HCl/NaOH reaction and NaHCO3/NaOH reaction)
(reaction 1: HCO3-(aq) + H2O(l) <------> H30+(aq) + CO3^2-(aq)
Use Hess's law to show the relationship among DeltaH for reaction 1 and the DeltaH values for the two neutralization reactrions determined in part 1. (DeltaH values from part 1 for HCl/NaOH: -44 and -41kj. DeltaH values from part 1 for NaHCO3/NaOH: -25 and -28kj)
Please help, I have no idea what im doing :(
Explanation / Answer
H+ + OH- ---> H2O Hrxn = -44
HCO3- + OH- --> H2O + CO3-2 HRxn = -25
we need
HCO3- +H2O --> H+ + CO3-2
clearly, we need to add the ivnerted reaction of (1) to (2)
invert (1)
H2O--->H+ + OH- Hrxn = +44
HCO3- + OH- --> H2O + CO3-2 HRxn = -25
add all
H2O + HCO3- + OH- --> H2O + CO3-2 + H+ + OH- HRxn = 44-25
cancel common terms
HCO3- +--> CO3-2 + H+ HRxn = 19
which is what we watned (or add H2O in both sides:)
HCO3- + H2O --> CO3-2 + H3O+ HRxn = 19
