Question
How would the following changes in procedure affect the final computed alue of the quilibrium constant, Ksp? Would the value increase, decrease, or remain unchanged? Provide a brief justification of each answer. (What we did in this experiment was basically titrate NaOH into a filtered saturated solution of KHT with phenolphthalein as the indicator until endpoint)
a. The student titrated a 25.00 mL sample of the saturated KHT solution instead of 20.00 mL sample specified in experiment
b. The student uses methyl red as the indicator while titrating the saturated KHT solution
c. During the filtration of the portion of saturated KHT solution, the student used water to rinse some of the KHT solution through the filter paper
Explanation / Answer
for question a) taking 25ml of kht instead of 20ml the volume of NaOH requires mores that means you get concentration of NaOH less than actual concentration. equilibrium constant inversily perportional to base concentration so equilibrium constant also increase.
b) insted of phenapthale student use methyl red indicator colour change is yellow to red insted of red to colourless. and small change in the volume of base consumed its less than phenapthalene indicator because of their ph ranges so basisity increase asusval equilibrium constant decrease note that this change minute only.
C)because of rinsing with water kht concentration decrease so volume bse consumed decrease then concentration base increses, equilibrium constant decreases.
