Question

Electrochemistry Lab:

I am working on some chemistry lab problems and I need help answering a couple. Need help on questions 9 - 12. Thanks

A. Voltage : 1.08

B.

1. Mass of Cu anode 2.739 2. Mass of Cu Cathode 2.562 3. Initial Current reading 1.6 AMP 4.Final Current reading 2.0 AMP 5. Average Current reading 1.8 AMP 6. time for run in seconds 300 Secs 7. final mass of Anode 2.731 8. final mass of cathode 2.228 9. Mass of loss of anode ???? 10. mass gained by cathode ?????? 11. moles in Cu lost by anode ??????? 12 moles of Cu gained by cathode ???????

Explanation / Answer

Anode: Cu (s) --------> Cu2+ (aq.) + 2 e

Cathode: Cu2+ (aq.) + 2 e --------> Cu (s)

According to Faraday's first law of electrolysis,

W = M c t / Z F

W = 63.5 * 1.8 * 300 / (2 * 96500)

W = 0.178 g.

So, mass loss at anode = mass gain at cathode = 0.178 g.

Moles of Cu lost at anode = Moles of Cu gains at cathode = 0.178 / 63.5 = 0.00280 mol
