Question
1) An antacid was mixed with a known concentration of hydrochloric acid
2) After the reaction above was completed, a titration was conducted using NaOH(known concentration).
3) The number of moles of NaOH was calculated.
4) The number of moles of HCl that antacid neutralized was calculated.
We did the procedures above for two types of antacids, and I got standard deviations for the value obtained in 4) above for two types of antacids:
Standard deviation for A product: 0.000231
Standard deviation for A product: 0.000179
How should I interpret these values?
It is about how to discuss the standard deviation in the lab report. I am not sure how to analyze the value for standard deviation and would like to know how to discuss the value obtained in the lab we have done. This lab is about back titration and basic steps are the followings:
1) An antacid was mixed with a known concentration of hydrochloric acid
2) After the reaction above was completed, a titration was conducted using NaOH(known concentration).
3) The number of moles of NaOH was calculated.
4) The number of moles of HCl that antacid neutralized was calculated.
We did the procedures above for two types of antacids, and I got standard deviations for the value obtained in 4) above for two types of antacids:
Standard deviation for A product: 0.000231
Standard deviation for A product: 0.000179
How should I interpret these values?
Explanation / Answer
Stadnard devitaion is a measurement of how variable is your data
Typically, it is difficult to decrease variation in samples, thats why we choose the smalles variation
In your experiment; 0.000179 method is more "precise"
Therefore, the data is more reliable for future experimetns.
Choose the second product antacid
