help please..

Write chemical equations that represent the potential reactions of copper metal with the four metal ion solutions. Based on your observations, which ones occurred and which did not ? Galvanized steel, used in construction and infrastructure, consists of steel (mostly iron) coated with an outer layer of zinc metal. Based on your observations, bow does galvanizing steel protect the steel from corrosion? Why is it not necessary to test the reactivity of the elemental metals with solutions of the same metal ion? To illustrate your explanation, write the equation for the potential chemical reaction using one of the metals studied in this lab. Some metals form crusty oxide layers that can flake off to expose clean metal surfaces to moisture and air. Other metals form oxide layers that are durable and relatively non-permeable. Use this fact to explain why aluminum, a more active metal than iron, is less susceptible corrosion.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1. The reactions of metal with other metal ion solutions depend upon their reactivity. Some metals are more reactive than others. The more reactive metal can displace the less reactive ones from their solutions.

In the reactivity series, the element placed above in the series, can displace the ones below them in the reactivity series.

Let us consider metal ion solutions of FeSO4 , Ag(NO3)2 , ZnSO4 , AlCl3

Cu can not displace Fe from its solution because iron is far more reactive and placed above copper in the reactivity series, hence no reaction .

copper reacts with silver nitrate to form , copper nitrate

Cu + 2Ag(NO3)2 ---> Cu(NO3)2 + 2Ag

copper displaces zinc from zinc sulfate solution to form copper sulfate ,

Cu + ZnSO4 ---> CuSO4 = Zn

copper being less reactive than aluminium , will not be able to replace aluminium from its solution so ,

Cu + AlCl3 ---> No reaction
