The standard conditions are 1M concnetration of electrolyte , 1 atm pressure for gases, 298 K .
a) The standard reduction potential of SHE( standard hydrogen electrode) is 0.00V
b) SHE is the primary standard electrode which can be coupled with another electrode and the potential difference measured is taken as the potential of the other electrode as SHE is 0.00V
When SHe is connected to Ni , Ni spontaneoulsy oxidiss to Ni+2 and H+ is reduced to H2.
Thus SHE is cathode and Niis anode.
**SRP values tell us whether the reduction of that element is spontaneous or not.
For example in the previous question , Ni and SHe are connected. Ni underwent oxidation .
That means its tendency for reduction is very less.SO its SRP is given with negative value and SOP is positive (shows its tendency for oxidation is more than reduction).
If you connect copper electrode with SHE, then Cu+2 ions spontaneouly undergoes reduction to Cu and H2 is oxidised to H+.
That means, Cu has more tendency for oxidation rather than reduction.
Thus SRP of Cu is positive and SOP is egative.
On the whole SRP negative , the electrode has less tendency for reduction.
SRP positive, easily undergoes reduction.
