Question

Some commercial drain cleaners contain a mixture of sodium hydroxide and aluminum powder. When the mixture is poured down a clogged drain, the following reaction occurs: 2NaOH(aq) + 2Al(s) + 6H_2O(l) rightarrow 2NaAl(OH)_4(aq) + 3H_2(g) The heat generated in this reaction helps melt away obstructions such as grease, and the hydrogen gas released stirs up the solids clogging the drain. Calculate the volume of H_2 formed at 34.5 degree C and 1.00 atm if 2.99 g of Al is treated with an excess of NaOH.

Explanation / Answer

mol of Al reacted = mass of Al/ molar mass of Al

= 2.99 g / 27 g/mol

=0.111 mol

from reaction,

mol of H2 formed = (3/2)*mol of Al reacted

= (3/2)*0.111 mol

=0.166 mol

now use:

Given:

P = 1.00 atm

n = 0.162 mol

T = 34.5 oC = (34.5+273) K = 307.50 K

use:

P * V = n*R*T

1.00 atm * Vi = 0.162 mol* 0.0821 atm.L/mol.K * 307.5 K

V = 4.09 L

Answer: 4.09 L
