Question

The mole is the unit of amount in chemistry. It provides a bridge between the atom and the macroscopic amounts of material that we work with in the laboratory. It allows the chemist to weigh out amounts of two substances, say iron and sulfur, such that equal numbers of atoms of iron and sulfur are obtained. Chemical reactions often take place at levels where using grams wouldn't make sense, yet using absolute numbers of atoms/molecules/ions would be confusing, too. Like all units, a mole has to be based on something reproducible. A mole is the quantity of anything that has the same number of particles found in 12.000 grams of carbon. That number of particles is Avogadro's number which is roughly 6.022 times 10^23. A mole of carbon atoms is 6.022 times 10^21 carbon atoms. A mole of chemistry teachers is 6.022 times 10^23 chemistry teachers. It's a lot easier to write the word 'mole' than to write '6.022 times 10^23 any time you want to refer to a large number of things! The mole is also the amount of substance. One mole contains as many entities as there are in 12 grams of carbon-12. The mass in grams of one mole of a compound is equal to the molecular weight of the compound in atomic mass units. The mass of 1 mole of an element or compound is called its molar weight or molar mass. The units for molar weight or molar mass are grams per mole - g/mol Discuss these questions among your group members: think about water molecules (H_2O) and sugar molecules (C_12H_11O_11) and try to predict the answers in the table below. Just predict - do not use calculator.

Explanation / Answer

this is becuase 1 gram of each will contain

mass will be same as each is 1 gram

No. of moles = Mass / molar mass

molar mass is different

so no. of moles not same

no. of molecules = no. of moles * avagadro number

so if no. of moles is not same no. of molecules will also not be same

do they have? 1 gram of each 1 mole of each mass yes no volume no yes # of moles no yes # of molecules no yes # of atoms no yes
