Question

A clashed wastewater containing 5 mg/L NH_3N to be breakpoint chlorinated (Le all the ammonia oxidized to nitrogen gas), The water has an alkalinity of 100 mg/L as CaCO_2. Note that ammonia concentrations in water are usually expressed as mg/l Determine: (a) write the balanced redox reactions using redox couches NH_2(g) and O_2/Cl (b) The stoichiometric requirement for Cl_2 (c) Is the water sufficiently buffered? Justify your answer. (d) How would you determine whether this reaction proceeds spontaneous as written?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Redox reaction

2NH3 N2 + 3H2

Cl2 2Cl- + 2H+

Overall reaction

2NH3 + Cl2 + 2H+ 2NH4Cl

(b) 2 units of NH3 require 1 unit of Cl2 for the reaction to take place

5 mg/L of NH3 requires 2.5 mg/L of Cl2 for the reaction to take place

(c) Alkalinity of water is quite low ie. 100 mg/L . So, we can say that water is sufficiently buffered.

(d) The entropy change for this reaction is 71.3 kJ/mole. Since S > 0 so, we can say that the reaction is spontaneous.
