Question

1) If there was a leak in the syringe and gas was escaping as the syringe plunger was being compressed, what would this do to the k value? Explain.

2) If the thermometer was calibrated incorrectly and was reading 2.0°C higher than it should for

all your experiments for the Gay-Lussac’s Law, what would this do to the graph? Explain.

3)Your absent minded lab partner misread the pressure in the room. Instead of 628 mmHg,

they said it was 700 mmHg. What will this do to the k value for the Gay-Lussac’s Law

experiment?

Explanation / Answer

1) If there was aleak in the syringe, the volume of the gas would be lower than the actual value. Thus the resultant k value would also be lower,

k = PV

2) According to the Cay-Lussac's law,

Pressure is directly proportional to temperature of the gas.

Is the temperature was inccorectly read and was 2.0 oC higher than the actual value, the resultant pressure would also be higher for the gas as calculated from this. the shape of graph however won't change. the slope would be higher.

3) The pressure was misread and was recorded higher than actual pressure value. The k value would be higher for the Gay-Lussac's law as the temperature would also be higher in this case. Volume would be lower.
