Question
In my Instrumental lab we are calculating the concentration of acetaminophen in different pain relievers. We massed the pill, crushed it, then dissolved it in 30 mL of methanol. After running the instrument the concentration was too high (mg/ml), so we diluted the concentration again by taking 1 mL of each sample and diluting it in 100 mL of methanol.
For the first sample we got anaverage concentration of 89.343 ppm. How do we calculate the initial concentration?
Average concentration=89.343ppm, Mass of whole pill=0.630g, Mass of half the pill=0.3137g
Explanation / Answer
Analysis of acetaminophen
1 ml sample had = 89.343 ppm acetaminophen
So 30 ml of original solution would have = 89.343 x 30
= 2680.29 ppm
The initial concentration is thus 2680.29 ppm
