Question

Answer the following questions before beginning the exercise: What is an alum? An electroplating unit used for winning from Al_2O_3 draws 1.0 ampere of current at a power requirement of 0.29 kilowatt hours per day. If the unit produces 8.0 g of aluminum hours per day, what is the cost of producing the aluminum for a can weighing 10.0 g at 5 per kilowatt hour? The solubility of alum, KAl(SO_4)_2 middot 12H_2O, in water solution at 0 degree C is approximately 114 g per liter. For this experiment calculate the mass of alum remaining in solution after completion of the crystallization based on a solution volume of 40 mL.

Explanation / Answer

1. Atom : Is the smallest unit of an element. The properties of an element can be deduced from the propertiesa of its atoms individually.

2. Time required to produce can weighing 10 g = 10/8 = 1.25 d

Power required = 1.25 x 0.29 = 0.3625 kiliwatt per hour

So cost of producing can = 0.3625 x 5 = 1.8125 cents

3. Solubility of alum = 114 g/L

So in 40 ml we would have = 114 g x 40 ml/1000 ml = 4.56 g alum in dissolved state

The rest would be in recrystallized from the solution
