Question

The change in entropy, delta s reaction, is related to the change in the number moles of gas molecules, delta n gas. Determine the change in the moles of gas for each of the following reactions and decide if the entropy increases, decreases, or has little to no change.
a) KO2 (s)------> K(s) + O2 (g)
delta n gas= ?
delta s rxn = ?

b) H2 (g) +Cl2 (g) ----> 2HCl (g)
delta n gas= ?
delta s rxn = ?

c) S (s) + O2 (g) ----> SO2 (g)
delta n gas= ?
delta s rxn = ?

d) PCl5 (s) -----> PCl3 (l) + Cl2 (g)
delta n gas= ?
delta s rxn = ?

Explanation / Answer

if dn is possitive, the entropy will increase drastically, if dn = 0, it does not change that much and if dn < 0, then this will have a decreas ein etropy

so

a) KO2 (s)------> K(s) + O2 (g)
delta n gas= 1 mol of O2 is formed
delta s rxn = must be positive

b) H2 (g) +Cl2 (g) ----> 2HCl (g)
delta n gas= 2- (1+1) = 0
delta s rxn = must be near 0

c) S (s) + O2 (g) ----> SO2 (g)
delta n gas= 1 - (1) = 0
delta s rxn = must be near 0

d) PCl5 (s) -----> PCl3 (l) + Cl2 (g)
delta n gas= 1 mol of Cl2 is produced
delta s rxn = the entopy increses
