Question
Define the following terms: faraday, salt bridge. Anode, cathode, voltaic cell, and electrolytic cell write a chemical equation for the reaction that occurs in the following cell: Cu | Cu^2+ (aq) || Ag^+ (aq) | Ag Given the following Es, calculate the standard-cell potential for the cell in question 2. Cu^2+ (aq) + 2e^- rightarrow Cu(s) E^o = + 0.34 V Ag^+(aq) + e^- rightarrow Ag(s) E^o = + 0.80 V Calculate the voltage of the following cell: Zn|Zn^2+ (0.10 M)||Cu^2+ (0.20 M)| Cu Calculate the cell potential, the equilibrium constant, and the free-energy change for Ca(s) + Mn^2- (aq) (1M) doubleheadarrow Ca^2+ (aq) (1 M) + Mn(s) given the following E^o values: Ca^2+ (aq) + 2e^- rightarrow Ca(s) E^o = - 2.87 V Mn^2+(aq) + 2e^- rightarrow Mn(s) E^o = - 1.18Explanation / Answer
1. Faraday: is the name of sciEntist who gives laws and Faraday constant. Faraday constant is magnitude of electric charge per mole of electrons. As per Faraday law, the amount of substance produced at each electrode in a chemical reaction is directly proportional to the quantity of charge flowing through the cell.
Salt bridge: It is an inverted U shape tube which conects two half cells of voltic cells. It maintains the electrical neutrality in solution that means in both half cells charges remain balanced. It keeps contents of both half cells separate. It allows flow of ions to maintain the balance of charge between cells.
Anode:
Cathode:
Voltic cell: it is an electrochemical cell. In this chemical energy is converted to electric energy. The two electrodes are placed in two different half cells. oxidation occurs at anode whereas reduction occurs at cathode
Electrovoltic cell:
It is a device in which electrical energy is converted into chemical energy or vice versa. It consist of two electrodes in which held in contact with electrolyte solution.
2. Equations for cell:
Cu----Cu2+ +2e- Oxidation
Ag+ + e- -----Ag. Reduction
Overall reaction
Cu(s)+ Ag+(aq)-----Cu2+(aq)+Ag(s)
3. Standard cell potential will be as per above equation
E cell=Ereduction +Eoxidation =0.80-0.34=0.46v. We took negative value for oxidation because give potential is reverse as per overall reaction
