Question
I'm doing a simple assignment for chemistry involving the scientific method. I'm almost done, but have run into an issue. My experiment is thus (does not have to be completely scientifically sound, don't worry).
"
Measure the growth (mm) of two groups of plants over a period of four weeks. The plants should be planted in a similar area with direct access to sun, and should be watered and measured at the same time twice a day. The sugar group will receive a solution of sugar and water during the scheduled watering time, while the non-sugar group (control) will receive only water. This will test if additional prepared sugar will contribute to the growth of the plant."
I have to define the term "Theories" and "Models" and provide examples. I've done the same for Hypothesis, observation, etc. But can't think of a way to phrase an example with theory and model, nor can i get a concrete defition that tells them apart.
I will post my other submissions to help clarify.
"
Observations: Observable effects that can be explained by facts. Can be analyzed to produce trends about the observation.
Example: Plants grow and thrive when provided with sun, water, and soil. Plants produce sugar to store energy and grow. "
"
Hypothesis: A testable idea that might explain an observation. Does not need to be correct.
Example: If sugar (glucose) water is added to potting soil, would it speed up the plant’s metabolism, leading to an increase in plant height?"
"
Variables: Something that is manipulated in the experiment to provide data that might prove or disprove a hypothesis. There are two general variables, the dependent and independent variable. The independent variable is the variable that is being manipulated or tested, while the dependent variable is the response to the manipulation.
Example: IV: Composition of water plant is absorbing
DV: How high the plant grows in response to the water"
Thank you so much for your help!
Explanation / Answer
HEORIES : A set of assumptions, propositions, or accepted facts that attempts to provide a plausible or rational explanation of cause-and-effect (causal) relationships among a group of observed phenomenon. The word's origin (from the Greek thorós, a spectator), stresses the fact that all theories are mental models of the perceived reality.a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.
EXAMPLES : I heard a theory that beauty marks on your skin are actually wounds from your past lives, that each mark stands for the part of your body where you were injured, ill, or killed in a previous life.
Models : a three-dimensional representation of a person or thing or of a proposed structure, typically on a smaller scale than the original.
Graphical, mathematical (symbolic), physical, or verbal representation or simplified version of a concept, phenomenon, relationship, structure, system, or an aspect of the real world. The objectives of a model include
(1) to facilitate understanding by eliminating unnecessary components,
EXAMPLES :
In our quarterly financial meeting we determined that we may have to look at possibly cutting back on our travel expenses based off of the profit/loss model we reviewed from the prior quarter.
