Question
For each of the following problems, supply the word(s) that is (are) consistent with the statement, or perform the required operation. Where applicable, assume that each reaction proceeds as written. Hydronium ion, H_3O^+, reacts with hydroxide ion, OH^-, to produce what substance? __________ A solution has an HCI concentration of 0.0025 M. It's H_3O^+ concentration is _________ Identify the Bronsted acid on the reactant side of the following reaction: H_2O + PO_4^3- ® HPO_4 + OH^- ______________ Identify the stronger acid in each pair: H_2CO_3 or HCIO_4; _____________ HF or H_2O; _______________ Which solution produces more H^+ in water, a 0.1M_3PO_4 solution or a 0.1M HBr solution? _____________ How would the addition of small amounts of HCI affect the pH of a solution that contains HPO^2- _4 and PO^3-_4 ? ______________ How would the addition of a few drops of NH, to a glass of distilled water affect its pH? ______________ Identify the weakest base in this reaction: NH_2 + HCI ® Cl + NH_3 _____________ Circle the combinations below that will produce a buffer solution. HCI and KC1 H_2CO_3 and NaHCO_3 H_3PO_4 and NACl HC_2H_3O_2 and KC_2H_3O_2 NH and NHClExplanation / Answer
5(a) produces water (H2O)
(b) [H3O+] = 0.0025 M . As HCl is a strog acid , it will be completely dissociated in solution.
(c) H2O is the Bronsted acid on the left and on the right, HPO4^- is the Bronsted acid
(d) HClO4 is stronger than H2CO3. HF is stronger than H2O
(e) 0.1M H2PO4 will produce more H+ in water as H3PO4 has three removable protons.
(f) pH will decrease as number of H+ inceases in the solution
(g) pH will increse. NH3 will react with H2O to form OH- which will make the solution basic. As a result pH increases.
(h) weakest base is Cl^- as this is conjugate base of a strong acid
(i) The combination that will make a buffer :
H2CO3 + NaHCO3
HC2H3O2 + KC2H3O2
NH3 + NH4Cl
