Question
Which of the following statements concerning intermolecular forces is/are CORRECT?
1.) dipole-dipole attractions occur in all molecules that contain polar bonds, regardless of whether the molecule has a dipole.
2.) Induced dipole/ induced dipole forces exist in all molecular solids.
3.) hydrogen bonding only occurs in all molecules containing OH bonds
a. 1 only
b. 2 only
c. 3 only
d. 1 and 2
e. 1,2, and 3
The teacher told us that the answer is B, however I don't understand why " 1 " can't be correct. Can someone give me an explanation as to why it is wrong.
Explanation / Answer
1) dipole-dipole attractions occur in all molecules that contain polar bonds, regardless of whether the molecule has a dipole : incorrect
Example : CO2 or CCl4
They have polar bonds however they have net zero dipole moment due to their geometries.
So they will not have dipole-dipole interactions
2) Induced dipole/ induced dipole forces exist in all molecular solids.: correct
3) Hydrogen bond is formed between a hydrogen atom directily attached to F, N or O with other atom of F, N or O
so hydrogen bond can also occur in moleucles with HF bond or NH bonds
the above statement is incorrect
Answer: only b is correct
