Question

Its Cinco de Mayo and you and your friends decide to make homemade margaritas. The recipe that you find online is ail in metric and uses Molarity and percent solutions. Your friends GROAN but you say "Wait!! I got this. We learned this in Chemistry!" So - the simple syrup is a solution of table sugar dissolved in warm water. The recipe says to make 600 ml of a 3 M sucrose solution. The chemical formula for sucrose is C_12H_22O_11. How many moles of sucrose will you need? What is the gram formula mass of sucrose (just round each mass to one decimal place)? How much table sugar will you weigh out? How much water will you need? The recipe goes on to tell you that for best flavor, the 40% tequila (80 proof) must be diluted to a final concentration of 5%. You want to mix the 600 ml of simple syrup, 250 ml of lime juice and enough ice to have a total margarita volume of 1200 ml. How much tequila will you need to add to your recipe?

Explanation / Answer

Ans. #1. Moles of sucrose required for 600 mL (= 0.600 L) solution =

Molarity of sucrose X Volume in liters

                                    = 3.0 M x 0.6 L

                                    = (3.0 mol/ L) x 0.6 L                        ; [1 M = 1mol/L]

                                    = 1.8 mol

#2. Mass of sucrose required = Moles x Molar mass

                                    = 1.8 mol x (342.30 g/ mol)

                                    = 616.1 g

#3. Assuming the table sugar is pure sucrose, the mass of its required = 616.1 g

#4. Amount of water required: While preparing concentrated solution, it is advised to use a standard volumetric flask. For example, in this case, take 600.0 mL (it’s hypothetical, you generally don’t get a flask of this volume) volumetric flask. Add a small amount of water in it. Gradually add 616.1 g sucrose in it while adding a little water each time. Make the volume upto the mark with distilled water.

Adding 616.1 g sucrose to 600 mL water will cause increase in the final volume above 600 mL. Being on safe side, make 1.0 L solution and use 600.0 mL of its.

#5. Final volume = 1200 mL

Amount of pure (100%) tequila in it = 5 % of 1200 mL

Now, Using    C1V1 = C2V2                        - equation 1

C1= Concentration, and V1= volume of initial solution 1         ; 40% tequila

C2= Concentration, and V2 = Volume of final solution 2 ;       5 % of 1200 mL

Or, 40% x V1 = 5 % x 1200 mL

            Or, V1 = (5 % of 1200 mL) / 40% = 150.0 mL

Thus, add 150.0 mL 40% tequila in 1 final volume of 1200 mL of desired solution.

Amount of water (ice) required = Total volume – (vol. of syrup + Tequila + Juice)

= 1200 mL – (600 mL syrup + 150.0 mL tequila + 250 mL juice)

= 1200 mL – 1000 mL

= 200 mL

Preparation: Add 600 mL of 3M sucrose syrup, 150.0 mL of 40% tequila, 250 mL juice and 200 mL ice water to get the final solution.
