Question

Use the solubility table to answer the following you do not need to mix any chemicals. Circle all of the following compounds that will not dissolve completely (or form a ppt) in HCI(aq) AI(OH)_3(s) CUCO_3(S) Pb(NO_3)_2(aq) CaSO_4(s) BaCl_2(aq) AgNO_2(aq) Circle all of the following solutions that will not precipitate with addition of CuSO_4 NaOH(aq) BaCl_2(aq) Pb(NO_3)_2(aq) K_2CO_3(aq) CuCl_2(aq) NH_4Cl(aq) Circle all of the following compounds that will not precipitate with addition of Mg(IO_3)_2aq) CaCl_2(aq) NH_4OH(aq) ZnSO_4(aq) Ba(NO_3)_2(aq) Pb(NO_3)_2(aq) K_2CO_3(aq)

Explanation / Answer

1) HCl(aq) ---->H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

BaCl2(s)<--->Ba2+(aq)+Cl-(aq)

HCl has Cl- ions in the solutions so any compound with Cl- ions in solution will be thrown out of the solution due to excess of common ion,Cl- .(common ion effect due to excess of product ion,reverse rxn is accelerated- Le Chatlier's principle) ,so BaCl2 is precipitated.

2)CuSO4--->Cu2+ +SO42-

common ion Cu2+ with CuCl2 will cause the precipitation of the same(excess of product ion,reverse reaction favored)

Rest all will not precipitate out but dissolve
