Map A Sapling Learning The neutralization of H3PO4 with KOH is exothermic. HIPO, (aq) 3KoHlaq) 3H,oli) KuPO (aq)+ 173.2 kJ 55.0 mL of 0.200 M H3PO4 is mixed with 55.0 mL of 0.600 M KOH initially at 21.29 °C. Predict the final temperature of the solution if its density is 1.13 g/mL and its specific heat is 3.78 Jl(g aC) Assume that the total volume is the sum of the individual volumes. mol of H3PO4 reacting = M*V
= 0.200 M * 0.055 L
= 0.011 mol
According to reaction,
for 1 mol of H3PO4, heat released = 173.2 KJ
so, for 0.011 mol, heat released = 0.011 mol * 173.2 KJ
= 1.9052 KJ
= 1905.2 J
This heat will be absorbed by solution which will increase temperature of solution
volume of solution = 55.0 mL + 55.0 mL = 110 mL
mass of solution,
m = density * volume
= 1.13 g/mL * 110 mL
= 124.3 g
now use:
Q = m*C*(Tf-Ti)
1905.2 = 124.3 * 3.78 * (Tf - 21.29)
(Tf - 21.29) = 4.05
Tf = 25.34 oC
Answer: 25.34 oC
