Question
Select the scenario that describes a mass extinction, A rainforest in Brazil is cleared to harvest timber, and many species of plants, insects and animals lose their habitat and as a result they die. During the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago, an asteroid struck the Earth and killed nearly 80 % of the species living on Earth, including the dinosaurs. Giant flightless birds called elephant birds that were native to the island of Madagascar quickly became extinct in the 17th century as a result of human activities. Every fall in the temperate regions of the Earth, deciduous tree species lose their leaves and enter a dormant state to prepare for the cold.Explanation / Answer
As the name suggests, a mass extinction could be described as any catastrophic event (such as an asteroid hitting the earth) which brings about a massive and widespread destruction in the flora and fauna with respect to the whole planet. Such kind of event leaves very little or no possibility for the continuity of life. A new order of life emerges following the mass extinction of the life forms inhabiting the planet at that time. With respect to the above question the second option best descibes the scenario of mass destruction where an asteroid killed more than 80% of the living forms including the dinosaurs.
