Question
The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between the copper solution and aluminum wire is as follows: 2Al(solid) + 3CuCl2(aq) -> 2AlCl3(aq) + 3Cu(solid)
a) Explain what is causing the color change that occurs during this reaction, using the chemical reactions to help explain.
b) There is another reaction occurring between the Al wire and the excess HCl, that creates a gas (bubbles). Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction.
___Al(solid) + ___Hcl(aq) -> ___ ______________(aq) + _____ ______________(g)
c) Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic, and how do you know?
Please answer all.
Explanation / Answer
(a) There is a change colour due to chang of Cu2+ ion to Cu
Cu2+ (aq.) + 2 e ------------> Cu (s)
Blue brown
(b) 2 Al (s) + 6 HCl (aq.) --------------> 2AlCl3 (aq.) + 3 H2 (g)
(c) Reaction of active metals with diliute strong acids produce heat. SO it is exothermic reaction.
