Question
1. Last week CHM 375 students distilled their crude cyclohexene product mixtures a pure (Exp. F) in hopes of isolating a sample cyclohexene. Final products were analyzed by IR spectroscopy. IR spectra of the starting material, cyclohexanol, and the expected product, cyclohexene, are provided below. For each literature spectrum (SDBs), complete the table of key IR absorptions by adding the appropriate frequency or range of frequencies found in the spectrum. (6 pts] Key IR absorbance peaks Vo.H Vc-H (2sp') Vc.oExplanation / Answer
Interpretation of IR
The above shown IR spectrum shows the following peaks
V(O-H) at 3350 cm-1 for the O-H stretching frequency
V(C-H)(2sp3) is at 2850-2950 cm-1 peaks which correspond to the sp3 C-H stretching frequency
V(O-H) is at 1410 cm-1 for the C-O stretching frequency
So the above shown IR is for the starting material cyclohexanol which clearly is confirmed by broad peak at 3350 cm-1 and no peaks in the region 3000-3100 cm-1 and 1600-1680 cm-1 for the C=C stretching.
