Question

The test tubes shown here contain equal amounts of the specified motor oils. Identical metal spheres were dropped at the same time into each of the tubes, and a brief moment later, the spheres had fallen to the heights indicated in the illustration. Rank the motor oils in order of increasing viscosity, and explain your reasoning: Heat is added to ice at 0 degree C. Explain why the temperature of the ice does not change. What does change? Explain why the enthalpies of vaporization of the following substances increase in the order CH_4

Explanation / Answer

1) The viscosity of an oil can be measured by measuring the rate at which a metal ball falls through it. The rate of fall of ball decreases in oil with increasing the viscosity of the oil. This is due to the stronger intermolecular forces of attraction which causes more internal friction in an oil. Therefore the order of motor oil in increasing viscosity is     (20<30<40<50)

2) When heat is applied to ice at 00C, it is utilized for breaking lattice and it convert to the liquid . So there is a phase change from solid to liquid and the heat is used for this phase transformation instead of increasing the temperature.

3) Enthalpy of vapourization is the amount of energy required for the liquid to transform it into a gas.The stronger the bonds in a molecule, more will be the energy needed to transform into a gas. Among methane, ammonia and water, there is a strong hydrogen bonding in water with respect to ammonia and no hydrogen bonding in methane. Therefore water has highest enthalpy of vapourization and methane has least in the above series.
