Question

Suppose you were dissatisfied with both Celsius and Fahrenheit units and wanted to design your own temperature scale based on ethyl alcohol (ethanol). On the Celsius scale, ethanol has a melting point of -117.3Cand a boiling point of 78.5 C, but on your new scale calibrated in units of degrees ethanol, E , you define ethanol to melt at 0 E and boil at 100 E.

Part A

How does your ethanol degree compare in size with a Celsius degree?

Part B

How does an ethanol degree compare in size with a Fahrenheit degree?

Part C

What are the melting and boiling points of water on the ethanol scale?

Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma.

Part D

What is normal human body temperature (98.6 F) on the ethanol scale?

Part E

If the outside thermometer reads 130 E, how would you dress to go out?

If the outside thermometer reads 130  , how would you dress to go out? I would wear a light T-shirt. I would wear a sweater or a light jacket. I would wear a fully bagged jacket. I wouldn't go out, because it's very cold.

Explanation / Answer

How F to C conversion works is that it substract 32 to make freezing point = 0 so, the rest of the temperature will be (F - 32) x = C. We need to find what x is so, plug in boiling point vale of F and set C = 100 and find x. (212 - 32) x = 100. x = 5/9

Same application when you are converting Celsius to Ethanol degree.

Let E = Ethanol degree
Freezing pt. of ethanol = -117.3C
Make that zero, so. (-117.3 + 117.3) = 0 Ethanol degree
So far the formula is (C + 117.3) x = E
Plug in boiling point of ethanol in C and put 100 in E
(78.5 + 117.3) x = 100
x~5107/10000 (You can use 51/100 but you get around 99.858)

(C + 117.3) 5107/10000 = E

We know that: C = (F - 32) 5/9, plug it in above equation.
(C + 117.3) 5107/10000 = E
((F - 32) 5/9 + 117.3) 5107/10000 = E
(5F/9 - 17.78 + 117.3)5107/10000 = E
(5F/9 + 99.52)5107/10000 = E

C) What are the melting and boiling points of water on the ethanol scale? Just use Celsius of boilnig point and melting point of water and solve for E.

D) What is normal human body temperature (98.6 ) on the ethanol scale?
98.6 is in F so use this equation and solve for E:
(5F/9 + 99.52)5107/10000 = E
