A sample of a compound, when heated in an open test tube, produced several of water on the cool upper region of the residue dissolved in water forming a yellow-brown solution, while the original compound formed a solution in water. Why should you conclude that the compound not a true hydrate? 3. what is meaning the numeral represented by X in a general formula for a hydrate: the of salt x H2O?Explanation / Answer
2 Answer
Here If we assume that the compound were a true hydrate it will form aqueous solutions of identical color both before and after heating. But in this case the residue forming yellow browwn solution and origional compound is formed colorless solution. so the compound is not true hydrated.
3 Answer
It is simply meaning that 1 molecule of the salt have 'X' molecules of water in the salt's crystal structiure.
for examples coppe sulfate salt ( CuSO4 . 5H2O )
