Question

Write down and balance chemical equations for (a)the reaction for burning 1 mole of hydrogen gas in oxygen to produce liquid water and (b) the reaction for burning 1 mole of liquid octane (C_8H_18) in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide gas and liquid water: (a) ___ (b) ___ Now look at the two reactions and discuss with your group the following questions: (a) Which of these two methods of obtaining energy is better for the environment? (b) If you want to use these two fuels, hydrogen gas or liquid octane, directly which one of them is easier and safer to store and transport? Now write down your answers below and don't forget to justify them! (a) (b)

Explanation / Answer

The balanced reaction is as follows:

2H2 + O2 ----> 2H2O + Energy

The balanced reaction for combustion of octane is as follows:

C8H18 + 12.5 O2   -----> 8 CO2  + 9 H2O + Energy

When we consider environment issues, obtaining energy from H2   is better than C8H18 beacause, when we use Octane CO2 is formed. where as in hydrogen reaction CO2 is not formed.

(b) Using Octane is safer since it is liquid in normal environment and more over storage and handling H2 is very difficult as it is very hghly reactive gas.
