Question

These are the questions: 1. Cells form tissues and organs, which form into complex systems. What are two organs of the digestive system? 2. The maturing of a tadpole into a frog and the changing of a caterpillar into a moth are both forms of a special pattern of development. What is this pattern of development called? 3. What evidence do we have that species have changed over time? 4. Compare and Contrast carnivores and omnivores. Name one way they are similar and one way they are different. 5. Food is a source of nutrients for some organisms. Why do all life forms need nutrients? Give at least two reasons. 6. Describe the difference between a food chain and a food web.

Explanation / Answer

1.      Cells formtissues and organs, which form into complex systems. What are twoorgans of the digestive system?

Themain organs of the digestive system are the mouth, stomach, liver, pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine. Secondary organsinclude the esophagus (food tube connecting mouth and stomach) andthe gall bladder (concentrates and distributes the bile from theliver).

2.      2. Thematuring of a tadpole into a frog and the changing of a caterpillarinto a moth are both forms of a special pattern of development. What is this pattern of development called?

Metamorphosis

3.      3. What evidencedo we have that species have changed over time?

Morphological change from larva to the adult isgrouped separately as progressive, regressive and remodelling. These morphological changes are less marked in tailed amphibians orurodeles.

A)Regressive changes are:

1) Resorption of tail and tail fin byautolysis.

2) Resorption of gills, closure ofgill cleft and disappearance of prebranchialcavity.

3) Horny lining of jaws isshed.

4) Shortening of cloacaltube.

5) Reduction of some larval bloodvessels

6) Loss of lateral linesystem

B) Progressive changes are:

1) Development of limbs. Hindlimbsappear first then forelimbs.

2) Development of middle ear andtympanic membrane to respond to air vibrations.

3) Eyes protrude, eyelids develop, the eyes change from lateral to frontal position for binocularvision.

4) Development oflung.

5) Development of tongue and tonguemuscles.

6) Replacement of cartilage skeletonwith that of bony.

4. Compare and Contrast carnivores andomnivores. Name one way they are similar and one way they aredifferent

a carnivore is an animal thatstrictly eats other animals.

. an omnivore eats both animalsand plants.

A carnivoremeaning 'meat eater' (Latin carne meaning 'flesh' andvorare meaning 'to devour'), is an organism that derivesits energy and nutrient requirements from a diet consisting mainlyor exclusively of animal tissue, whether through predation orscavenging.[1][2] Animals that dependsolely on animal flesh for their nutrient requirements areconsidered obligate carnivores while those that also consumenon-animal food are considered facultative carnivores.[

Omnivores also consume both animaland non-animal food, and apart from the more general definition, there is no clearly defined ratio of plant to animal material thatwould distinguish a facultative carnivore from an omnivore, or anomnivore from a facultative herbivore, for that matter.[3] A carnivore that sits at the top of thefoodchain is an apex predator.

Plants that capture and digestinsects are called carnivorous plants. Similarly fungi that capturemicroscopic animals are often called carnivorousfungi.

5.      . Food isa source of nutrients for some organisms. Why do all life formsneed nutrients? Give at least two reasons

More than 30 elements have a keyfunction in helping plants and animals live and behealthy.

Everything around us is composedof chemical elements. Elements are the basic building blocks of ourlives. Elements combine with one another in different proportionsto form everything from the air that we breathe, to the wood thatwe use to build our homes, to our own bodies.

Our bodies use different chemicalelements for different functions. For instance, our bodies usecalcium to build strong bones and fluorine makes our teethhealthier. As our bodies consume these elements through dailyfunctioning, we have to replace them in order to stay healthy andstrong. The greatest source of these elements is through the foodwe eat. Because some of us do not always eat the right foods, wesometimes have to take dietary supplements, such as vitamins, toassure that we maintain the proper chemical balance in ourbodies.

Animals get many of theirnutrients like carbohydrates, fats, proteins and amino acids, andvitamins through their diet.

. 6. Describe the difference between a food chainand a food web.

Afood chain is a single line of organisms, where each is preceded bysomething that it consumes and is followed by something thatconsumes it. A food web branches out in all directions with arrowspointing from organisms to any number of organisms that consumeit.
