Question
ach 7. In lecture, real experimental data was presented for the decomposition reaction wherein N20s decomposed to NO2 and O2 at 30°C. Use the data provided to answer the following three questions: a) Assume that the order of the reaction with respect to N20s is either 1st or 2nd What is the order? Support your contention (see 9b below) late b) Support your answer in part 9a with appropriate graphical analysis of the data using the Excel program. You should present 2 appropriate graphs properly titled and with properly labeled axes to support your contention. c) Give the rate constant for the reaction with the proper units. d) Calculate ti2 for this reaction.Explanation / Answer
(a)
According to experimental data, substituting rate and concentration into the following equations
r = k[N2O5]1 if it is a first-order reaction
r = k[N2O5]2 if it is a second-order reaction
We see that on substituting the experimental data into k[N2O5]1 satisfies the values of rate. Hence order is 1 with respect to N2O5.
(b)
Question 9a has not been submitted
(c)
For the first order reaction, the equation is:
ln([A]/[A0]) = -kt
or: ln(5/5.12) = -k*(4.26min)
thus k = -ln(5/5.12)/(4.26min) = 0.00557/min
(d)
t1/2 = 0.693/k (for a first-order reaction)
= 0.693/0.00557
= 124. min
