Question

Problem #7 is my question 5. A student obtained the following data in this experiment: barometric pressure 740.0 torr volume of water displaced 200.0 mL, and the temperature of the gas 30.0°C. If the student's calculated values for R and the percentages of KCIOa in the mixture were 70.0 L torr/mol-K and 50.00%, respectively, what was the mass of the residue formed by heating the KCioa Mno2 mixture? 6. Suppose that a student performed the experiment and the calculations per fectly except for the following: Unknown to the student, the mixture contained KCIO instead of KCloa. Would the student's calculated value for Rbe equal to, higher than, or lower than the true values (Assume that KCio decomposes to 7. If the sample in this experiment was not totally decomposed, how would the calculated value of R be affected?

Explanation / Answer

2KClO3 (s) -------------> 2KCl (s)+ 3O2 (g)
If the sample is not decomposed completely then the volume of water displaced will be less because less
moles of O2 will be produced in this case.
( n and V will have a lesser value compared to those values at complete decomposition but V is dominant)
R = PV / nT
Since R is directly proportional to V, the value of R will be slightly less .
