Question

The following two questions relate to the following structures (A-H), which show different ionized forms of the amino acid, lysine i) Identify the ionized form that would be found in cells at pH = 7.0 _____ ii) What is the net change of lysine at pH = 7.0 _____ iii) Suppose that NASA discovers a new life form on Mars, which also contains lysine, but the pH in the cells of this organism is 1.0. Identify the ionized form of lysine that would exist in these cells _____ iv) What would be the net change of lysine in this Martian organism _____

Explanation / Answer

For the amino acid lysine,

i) The ionized form that would be found in cells at pH 7 : G

ii) net charge of lysine at pH 7 : +1

iii) Ionized form of lysine at pH 1 : F

iv) net charge on lysine at pH 1 : +2

This is done by looking at the pKa's of lysine amino acid.
