Question

Exercise 1: Unit Conversion

Use Figure 9 to convert each value into the designated units. Submit this exercise to your professor when completed.

Figure 9. Conversions for temperature, time, mass and length.

1. 46.0 g = _______ kg

2. 57 seconds = ________ minutes

3. 13.5 cm = ________ inches

4. 47 °F = _______ °C

Exercise 2: Significant Digits and Scientific Notation

Part 1: Determine the number of significant digits in each number and write out the specific significant digits. Submit Part 1 and Part 2 to your professor when completed.

1. 405000

2. 0.0098

3. 39.999999

4. 13.00

5. 80,000,089

6. 55,430.00

7. 0.000033

8. 620.03080

Conversion Chart Temperature: 5/9 (F 32) Time: 60 seconds equals one minute 60 minutes equals one hour Mass: 1000 milligrams equals one gram 1000 grams equals one kilogram Length: 2.54 centimeters equals one inch

Explanation / Answer

Exercise 1:

1. 46.0 gm = 46.0 X 10-3 X 10+3 gm = 46.0 X 10-3 (X 10+3 gm) = 0.046 Kg (As 1 Kilo = 10+3 )

2. 57 seconds = (57/60) X (60 seconds) = 0.95 Minute (As 60 seconds = 1 Minute)

3. 13.5 cm = 13.5 cm X (1 inch / 2.54 cm ) = (13.5 / 2.54) = 5.31496 inch. (As 1 inch = 2.54 cm, multiplying with (1/2.54) is similar to multiplying 1, but we obtain result in the desired unit.)

4. 47 0F = 8.334 0C

As Formula says:

C = (5/9) X (F-32)

now substitue 47 in place of F in above equation

(Ans (in 0C)= (5/9) X (47-32)= (15X5)/(9)= (25/3) =8.334 0C)

Exercise 2:

1. 405000 has 3 signigicant digits.

(by 3 rules:

i. Zeroes between 2 non-zero digits are significant. this makes 1 zero that is in between 4 & 5 as significant.

ii. Non-zero digits are always significant. hence this makes both 4&5 significant.

iii. Trailing Zeroes in a whole number are insignificant.

Hence total Significant figures becomes 3.)

2. 0.0098 has 2 Significant figures.

( Space holding zeros (zeroes preceeding a non-zero digit after the decimal postion of number) on numbers less than one are insignificant as when number written in scientific form as 9.8X10-3 Those 2 zeroes loses its significance.)

3. 39.999999 has 8 significant digits as Non-zero digits are always significant.

4. 13.00 has 4 significant figures as Trailing Zeroes Following a decimal gives the precision and hence are significant.

5. 80,000,089 has 8 significant figures as Zeroes between 2 non-zero digits are significant.

6. 55,430.00 has 7 significant digits as as Trailing Zeroes Following a decimal gives the precision and hence are significant and the zero preceeding the decimal is also significant because of the presence of the decimal point.

7. 0.000033 has 2 significant figures Space holding zeros (zeroes preceeding a non-zero digit after the decimal postion of number) on numbers less than one are not significant.

8. 620.03080 has 7 significant figures as a final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion ONLY are significant (i.e. after 8) and the space holding zero is not significant(i.e before 3). also zero after 2 is significant as it is followed by a decimal.
