Question

Using the table of relative acid/base strengths from your PowerPoint notes (posted in Course Resources if you haven't already printed them out), select every reaction that is expected to favor the products.

NH4+ + HCO3- <--> NH3 + H2CO3

PO4-3 + H2PO4- <--> 2 HPO4-2

HSO4- + F - <--> SO4-2 + HF

H - + OH -  <--> H2 + O-2

HNO3  + HSO4- <--> H2SO4 + NO3-

NH4+ + HCO3- <--> NH3 + H2CO3

PO4-3 + H2PO4- <--> 2 HPO4-2

HSO4- + F - <--> SO4-2 + HF

H - + OH -  <--> H2 + O-2

HNO3  + HSO4- <--> H2SO4 + NO3-

Explanation / Answer

We know that if the acid is weak then its conjugate base is strong and vice versa

Similarly with the base also

(1) NH4+ + HCO3- <--> NH3 + H2CO3

The above reaction is favor since NH4+ is strong acid & HCO3- strong base

(2) PO4-3 + H2PO4- <--> 2 HPO4-2

Here PO4-3 & H2PO4- both are strong bases so it is not-favor

(3) HSO4- + F - <--> SO4-2 + HF

HSO4- is a weak base & F - is strong base so reaction is not-favor

(4) H - + OH-   <--> H2 + O-2

On combination it produces H2O , so it is also not favor

(5) HNO3  + HSO4- <--> H2SO4 + NO3-

HNO3  strong acid & HSO4- is weak base so it is favor
