Question

The concentration of alcohol (CH_2CH_2OH) in blood, called the 'blood alcohol concentration' or BAC. Is given in units of grams of alcohol per 100 mL of blood. The legal definition of Intoxication. In many states of the United States. Is that the BAC is 0.08 or higher. What is the concentration of alcohol. In terms of molarity. In blood if the BAC is 0.03? a) Which will have the highest concentration of potassium ions: 0.20 M KCl. 0.15 M K_2CrO_4 or 0.030 M K_3PO_4? Clearly show all your work. b) Which will contain the greater number of moles of potassium ions: 30.0 mL of 0.15 M K2Cr04 or 25.0 mL of 0.080 M K_3PO_4? Clearly show all your work. a) How many milliliters of a stock solution of 6.0 M HNO_3 would you have to use to prepare 110 mL of 0.500 M HNO_3?

Explanation / Answer

Pb4.

grams of alcohol per 100 mL

0.08 g of ethanol / 100 mL

find Molarity for BAC = 0.08

so

molarity = mol of ethanl / volume solution

mol = mass/MW = 0.08 / 46.06844 = 0.0017365 mol of ethano per 100 mL

V = 100 mL = 0.1 L

so

M = mol/V = 0.0017365/0.1 = 0.017365 M of ethanol

Q5.

mol of K = i*M*V

i = ions, M molarity, V volume

assume the same volume:

KCl = 0.2*1 = 0.20

K2Cr2O4 = 2*0.15 = 0.30

K3PO4 = 3*0.08 = 0.24

the highest is K2CrO4
