Question
Predict and calculate the effect of concentration changes on an equilibrium system.
Close Problem
Some PCl5 is allowed to dissociate into PCl3 and Cl2 at 523 K. At equilibrium, [PCl5] = 0.170 M, and [PCl3] = [Cl2] = 9.22×10-2 M. Additional PCl5 is added so that [PCl5]new = 0.268 M and the system is allowed to once again reach equilibrium.
(a) In which direction will the reaction proceed to reach equilibrium? _________ (to the right or to the left?)
(b) What are the new concentrations of reactants and products after the system reaches equilibrium?
Explanation / Answer
The reaction will go towards right side
Given K= 0.0501
PCl5. -----> PCl3 + Cl2
0.268-x. 0.0922.+x 0.0922+x
0.0501 = (0.0922.+x)*(0.0922.+x) /(0.268-x)
On solving,
X= 0.0211
PCl5 = 0.268-0.0211 =0.2469 M
PCl3 = 0.0922.+0.0211 = 0.1133 M
Cl2 = 0.0922.+0.0211 = 0.1133 M
