Question
You Wish to create a buffer using nitrous acid as your weak acid (HNO_2, K_a = 7.24 times 10^-4) If you have 48.8 mL of an 0.100 M solution of HNO_2 and 0.164 M solution of NO_2, what is the pH? Supposing you wish to create a solution with a pH of 3.27. If you begin with 48.8 mL of a 0.100 M solution of HNO_2, how many grams of NaNO_2 would you have to add to the solution. Assume that the volume does not change in the process. Instead, you begin with 48.8 ml of a 0.100 M solution of HNO_2 and decide to create your buffer solution by adding NaOH to the system. How many grams of NaOH would you have to add in order to have your desired pH of 3.27? Assume that the volume does not change in the process.Explanation / Answer
1. Use henderson equation for solving thos question
Ph= Pka + log (salt)/(acid)
Putting the values of concentration of salt and acid, and take the antilog of Ka
And put this value in above equation , you can calculte Ph easily
3. This part is same as second part, put all the values and find out the concentration of base
NaOH
Grams of NaOH= molar mass(40) x concentration
All the three parts are based on henderson equation, but the questios ae calculative . You can valculate using henderdon equation for buffer solution.
2. In this part you have to find out the concentration of Base NaNO2, Use above equation take antilog of Ka and put the value of Ph and conc of acid. You can easily calculate conc of NaNO2.
Grams of base = molar mass × molarity(conc)
