Given the following information:
(1) Write the net ionic equation for the reaction that occurs when equal volumes of 0.264 M aqueous hydrofluoric acid and sodium hypochlorite are mixed. It is not necessary to include states such as (aq) or (s).
(2) At equilibrium the _________reactantsproducts will be favored.
(3) The pH of the resulting solution will be _________greater thanequal toless than seven.
Explanation / Answer
1) Balanced net ionic eq that occurs is
HF + ClO- <----> HOCl + F -
2) equilibrium constant K = Ka of HF / Ka of HOCl = 7.2 x 10^-4 / ( 3.5 x 10^-8) = 20571
Hence at equilibrium products will be favoured
3) pH of resultanat solution will be basic , hence greater than seven ( since HF is stronger acid than HOCl , and F- is stronger base than OCl- , we see in products we have F- , hence we get overall basic )
