Synthesis of meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin L Introduction Porphyrins are aromatic macrocycles that have received great interest by inorganic chemists in the last 60 years. Several classes of this macrocycle exist, each differing in the type of side chains that are attached. Porphyrins bind metals through the nitrogen atoms that are located in the central cavity of the structure. The resulting metalloporphyrins are attractive due to their involvement in various biological systems. Perhaps the most well-known example is the heme group found in the protein hemoglobin. This group consists of an iron atom attached to a porphyrin ring and plays a major role in the uptake and storage of oxygen within red blood cells.
