Question
This project is conducted to observe dissolved solutions and the formation of crystals. In this project, Epsom salt is chosen as the dissolved substance and the representation of crystal formation. The salt will dissolve when mixed with hot water and stirred. Over several days (usually 3 days), the water/salt solution will evaporate at a slow pace. As the water evaporated, the salt molecules will form salt crystals. Procedure: To conduct the experiment, follow the procedure below: Gather all materials over a protected surface. Boil 3/4 cup of water in a small pot until boiling. Once boiling, remove from heat and add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt and stir. Keep adding 1 tablespoon at a time until you've dissolved the entire 1 cud of Epsom salt. Create a sculpture with your pipe cleaner, but be conscious of its size, as it should fit easily in and out of the lid of your glass jar. After the salt/water solution has cooled, pour it into the glass jar. Add food coloring to the solution. Just a few drops will be sufficient. Use string to tie a knot from your pipe cleaner sculpture to a pencil. Lower the lied sculpture into the solution. The pencil will hold the sculpture in place. Observe the jar over the course of 3 days. Record all observations. Take pictures for reference. After the 3rd day, remove the sculpture. Handle the crystal sculpture. Record the shape and texture. Research Questions Upon conducting the experiment, answer the following questions: What's the chemical formula of Epsom salt? What do you think the formula of your final product should be? What happens to the solution as it sets over time? What happens to the salt as the salt/water solution evaporates? What is a crystal? Why do crystals form? Are the resultant crystals the same in size and shape? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
1)Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Formula is MgSO4
2) Since it is crystallized from water, hydrate of magnesium sulfate is formed. The formula will be MgSO4.nH2O. where bus the number of water molecule for crystallization. Usually it is 7.
3) The water began to evaporate and the solution becomes more concentrated with epsom salts.
4) As water evaporates, the salt concentration per unit volume increases. Slowly it began to crystalize.
5) Crystal is a solid material formed by the periodic arrangement of atoms ,ions or molecules.
6)It's one way of attaining stability and low energy in such crystalizing material
7) Usually the crystals will be of same shape but sometimes different size. The concentration gradient determines the size. Shape is almost uniform.
