1.) If we started with a culture containing 4,000 CFU in a total of 3 mL of broth and have exponential growth immediately at a rate of 30 minutes per generation, what is the theoretical population after 4 hours? (show your work)

2.) Give two reasons why an observed/experimental concentration at 4 hours is always less than the theoretical concentration (from question #1). One reason should pertain to the beginning of growth and the other toward the end of growth.

Explanation / Answer

If we start from 4,000 cfu ---- exponential growth ---- 4000^2 = 8000 --- in 30 min

8000 ^ 2 = 16000 cfu in 30 min

16000 ^ 2 = 32000 in 30 min

32000 ^ 2 = 64000 in 30 min

64000 ^ 2 = 128000 in 30 min

128000 ^ 2 = 256000 in 30 min

256000 ^ 2 = 512000 in 30 min

512000 ^2 = 1024000 in 30 min.

so after 4 hours the population will be 1024000 cfu.

2. theoretical values dont consider the parameters which are taken in experimental one --- during the growth of bacterial cells , they will undergo death due to the insufficient nutrition ,
