Question
A mix-up at a local distribution company has occurred and the company needs you to help straighten things out. You will be given one set of six bottles, the contents of each of the six bottles are known. Unfortunately, what is not known is which bottles contain what. Consulting any resources available to you, determine what each bottle contains without using any additional chemicals.
The bottles contain 25mL of each solution, and it is known that all solutions are 0.1M. Remember, you will need to evaluate whether any requested reagents pose safety or disposal issues.
Set of Solutions: NaCl (aq) Pb(NO3)2 (aq) NaOH (aq) BaCl2 (aq) CuCl2 (aq) CuSO4 (aq)
Any ideas on an experiment I can use to identify these chemicals?
Explanation / Answer
take a small amount (1mL) of each solution inseparate test tube and add HCl
while ppt will appears which dissolves on heating: solution is Pb(NO3)2 (aq)
-----------------------------------------------------
take a small amount (1mL) of each solution (except the one already identified) inseparate test tube and add H2SO4
while ppt appears : solution is BaCl2
---------------------------------------------------------------
take a small amount (1mL) of each solution (except the one already identified) inseparate test tube and add AgNO3
white ppt appears : either NaCl or CuCl2.
Identify CuCl2 solution by its color (green color)
NaCl solution will be colorless
-----------------------------------------------------------
take a small amount (1mL) of each solution (except the one already identified) inseparate test tube and add K3[Fe(CN)6]
chocolate brown ppt : CuSO4
remaining one is NaOH
