Question
Note the dynamic equilibrium in the opening ploeo, which solution changes color when the pH cr both solutions is increased? Explain. 5. Experimental Procedure, Part C.I. Will the addition of Nac H, o,to a CH cooH soluuon cause the pH to increase or decrease? Explain. See equation 6 A state of dynamic equilibrium, Ag,COMs 2Ag (ag) +con (ag), exists in solution. a. What shift, if any.occurs in the equilibrium ifmore Agzcols isadded o the system? b. What shift, if any, occurs in the equilibrium if AgNo,(ag) is added to the system? c. After water is added to the system and equilibrium is reestablished: what change in the number of moles of Ag (ag) occurs in the system? Explain. (ii what change in the concentration of Ag (ag) occurs in the system? Explain. .d. What shift occurs in the equilibrium if HC10ag) is added to the system? Explain. 214 LeChatelier's Principle; BuffersExplanation / Answer
4- The pH increase means there would be addition of the H+ ions in the equlibrium according to the le chatelier's principle the system will cope up to nulify the change in the system. As its a dynamic equation the rate of forward will increase as H+ ions will increase on the left hand side or in simple word the reacton will move forward. As we see the Cr+6 ---> Cr+7 and the rate of this oxidation half equation is incresed. This is the main reason for colour of solution to change.
5- I dont see the equation but from what i can guess its a buffer formation with sodium acetate and acetic acid.
the break down of CH3COOH happens very slowly as its a week acid and as a thumb rule we know that weak acid have a strong conjugate base. SO lets look at the hydrolysis of acetic acid.
CH3COOH + H2O --> CH3COO- + H3O+..
CH3COO- is a strong base, Now lets see the break down of Sodium Acetate.
NaC2H3O2 --> Na+ + CH3COO-...
So as we see addition of Sodium acetate will increase the concentration of Acetic ions which are strong base the pH will increase but to a certain limit as this is a buffer solution.
A solution that contains both the acid and conjugate base is called a Buffer Solution . The buffer will resist the change of pH when more NaC2H3O2 is added but the pH will always increase until you reach the maximum pH possible.
6 a. There will be no effect on the equlibrium because Pure solid as well as pure liquids are not included in equlibrium constant expression. This is because their activity is considered to be = to 1. This is a thumb rule a student should always remember this because this rule makes for many trick questions.
b. As Its a solid decompostion the addition of AgNO3 does not effect the equation.
