Question

For each of the following pairs of molecules, indicate the number of stereocenters in the structure (write the number next to the structure), whether each of the structures is chiral (at room temperature, on time average), and the stereochemical relationship(s) between the two structures. Pairwise Descriptor: (circle all that apply) Constitutional Isomer Homomer Enantiomer Diastereomer Pairwise Descriptor: (circle all that apply) Constitutional Isomer Homomer Enantiomer Diastereomer Pairwise Descriptor: (circle all that apply) Constitutional Isomer Homomer Enantiomer Diastereomer

Explanation / Answer

a)

both species are chial, since they have chiral carbons...

These must be diastereomer, since they have chiral centers, but are not mirrr images s they are not enantiomers

b)

both are chiral, since the carbons are bonded to 4 different species, therefore.. ignore constituional isomer and homomers

Note htat CH3-OH are against each other in one image, in the other they are next to each other, so they are NOT enantiomers, since they are not mirror images, they must be diastereomers

c)

left and right side have both two chiral centers (each)

since the carbon --> OH,H,CH3,rest of mlecule in both cases

so... they are not constituional isomers

note that:

if CH3 groups are in the fron ALL of them

and OH are sent to the back

these must be the same molecule, i.e. homomers
